Ha “ferrets”! Only Jim, D’ya get thee idea??
@skittlebags77 oh, I saw it ok!!
@bigkiwial Apparently you didn’t see the comment RIGHT BEFORE THIS ONE
@jbkimble28 Fucking bullshit, thats a gennaker, the prod only comes out like that on the stbd side because the designer had no idea how to get it out thru the centre like on a thompson, and it should be able to rotate, like on a thompson.
@multitalent8 Touche’……That was the Vang. And I have to admit that I didn’t watch the video long enough to see them Jibe. My mistake. Gennaker.
@jbkimble28 since when do we use a spinnaker pole on the lee side??
That’s the vang you dweeb. Look, a spinnaker is never attached
to the bowsprit, okay?
@neketr Those who say sailing downwind is not really “sailing” then they obviously have NO idea what they are talking about. Sailing down wind is the most dangerous point of sail. Jibing, pitchpole, broach to a forced knockdown, especially flying a spinn. If your on a boat, and your using the wind to power it…….its sailing
@multitalent8 not a gennaker……. check out the spin pole coming off the port side (black) and its coming off the bowsprit. –Asymmetrical Spinnaker.
sweet ride!
Oooooh, baby, I am impressed! That is one tight crew. Trust! Yeah, I thought that open cabin was a bit scary. LOVED the video. Wowee.
neat !

OK – to save time… Ben’s weight is too far forward (new boat – kicker release too short), flat entry reaching kite hard to set, 3DL mainsail used for IRC is not J80 OD class legal, outhaul was purposely not eased to depower main, backstay could be on more, main hatch should be closed, lazy sheet shouldn’t catch on the drum roller, trimmer should have bigger arms, angles were hot due to imminent lee-shore. Anything else?
To split hairs further… the caption was written with metadata in mind (presently 213,000 viewers) not really as a sailing description – gusts F8 would be better I admit… Your second point – North Sails (who made it) describes .75oz flat entry asymmetric spinnaker. Reaching asymmetrics/gennakers is a grey area but it’s being used as an asymmetric on this occasion. It’s heavier and smaller (by 10sqm) to the .5oz VMG asymmetric we left down below. Wish now we’d used the bigger kite… Kite?
Ok, first of all 30 knots of wind is force 7, so it’s force 7 with gusts of force 7? Second: this is not a spinnaker but a gennaker.
Nevertheless: nice video, wish I was on board!
how much wind????
perfect!
Once they jibed and unfurled the jib she really started humming – that is the sweetest feeling when that happens. A little weight shift aft might have given them another knot or two.
Yeah! But this is only running down the wind. Not many really considers this as “the sailing”..
This is exttreme sailing!
Great, great work on the helm (and rest of the crew).
anyone who has ever been coached or talked to old jimmy saltonstall has to say he’s a amazing coach and you’ve just got to luv the phrases he comes out with :)
Very very impressive!
Extra!
For its size New Zealand has the best Sailors , sailmakers , sparmakers and boat builders . Yes Britain has got some great Sailors Ben Anslie being 1 of them but Kiwis Rock !!!
Actually the boat is very light and responsive at that speed. My little sister is even trimming the kite. It is the concentration that is tiring – one small mistake and it’s a big bad wipe out! Then you need big arms..!
that helmsman had to have huge arms!!!
